Database management is the method to manage information that is essential to the business operations of an organization. It involves storing data, distributing it to applications and users making edits as needed and monitoring changes to data and making sure that data integrity is not compromised due to unexpected failure. It is an integral part of the overall informational infrastructure of a company that assists in decision making as well as corporate growth and compliance with laws such as the GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act.

In the 1960s, Charles Bachman and IBM along with other companies developed the first database systems. They evolved into information management systems (IMS) which allowed the storage and retrieve massive amounts of information for a range of purposes, ranging from calculating inventory to supporting complex human resources and financial accounting functions.

A database is a set of tables that arrange data according to a certain schema, such as one-to many relationships. It uses the primary key to identify records and allow cross-references between tables. Each table has a variety of fields, also known as attributes, which provide information about the data entities. The most widely used type of database currently is a relational model, designed by E. F. «Ted» Codd at IBM in the 1970s. This design is based upon normalizing data to make it easier to use. It also makes it simpler to update data without the need to modify several databases.

Most DBMSs are able to support different types of databases by offering different internal and external levels of organization. The internal level deals with cost, scalability, and other operational issues, such as the physical layout of the database. The external level is the representation of the database in user interfaces and applications. It can include a mixture of various external views based on different data models and can include virtual tables that are computed using generic data to enhance the performance.
